Rony Joaquin is a dancer and artist in the urban and contemporary dance scene in Montreal. Born in Moca, Dominican Republic, he moved to Montreal with his family at the age of 13. Without speaking either English or French, he discovered dance during his time at a summer French immersion camp at the Loyola Community Center for immigrant teenagers in Canada.
He decided to pursue dance in college and began his studies at Cégep de Saint-Laurent in the DEC dance program. In 2019, still eager to learn more, Rony tried his luck again at the École de danse contemporaine de Montréal and was admitted. He had the opportunity to learn from many talented teachers and choreographers, including José Navas, Bernard Martin, Part+Labors, Anne Lebeau, Jessica Serli, and Alisia Pobega.
In 2018, he discovered the Ballroom culture, a world rooted in the Black and Latinx transgender women communities of Harlem, New York. Voguing, his chosen discipline, led him to train at Urban Element Zone studio and compete in events in Toronto, Montreal, and New York.
Rony identifies as a queer artist, and it is primarily his roots and identity that drive him to share his art.
